On Tuesday, the Mayor's Office and the NYPD announced to drivers that the sheriff's office will tow and potentially auction off vehicles with fake and illegal license plates. The NYPD has issued 16,448 tickets and towed over 1,700 vehicles since July 2021.
Turns out, there is a huge problem that has it's hub in Texas for selling fake dealer tags. Its a practice being used so an individual, or group of people, don't have to register their vehicle. That vehicle is then used for nefarious reasons.
Since March 2020, there have been approximately 1.5 million instances in which speed or red light camera tickets were evaded through the use of obstructed or improper plates, costing the city up to $75 million in lost revenue, with each automated enforcement violation carrying a fine of $50, according to the report.
The site advocates for the use of front license plates for both driver and public safety, specifically noting the use of vehicles in felonious activities--kidnapping, drug smuggling, and major thefts, to name a few.
