Despite New York's effort to get motorists into new license plates -- there are still quite a few rolling around the state. That's prompted some to wonder "Does that have an impact on the Thruway's toll readers?"
Joseph and Michele Maldari, of Dix Hills, had a license plate stolen off their car while it was parked in the Huntington LIRR station in August 2021. Since then, the thief has racked up thousands of dollars in moving violations using the stolen plate, which the Maldaris have been fighting in traffic court.
On Tuesday, the Mayor's Office and the NYPD announced to drivers that the sheriff's office will tow and potentially auction off vehicles with fake and illegal license plates. The NYPD has issued 16,448 tickets and towed over 1,700 vehicles since July 2021.
