Google is now prompting users to record video selfies as an optional method for account sign-in and age verification. Initially announced in July, the feature is being actively pushed on Google’s homepage. Users can opt-in to have their video selfies used to “improve our facial recognition, age estimation, and other verification methods.” This move intensifies privacy concerns, as Google already collects extensive behavioral data. The reliance on facial recognition also raises questions about its security against sophisticated spoofing techniques like deepfakes, given the increasing accessibility of such technology.
