Axon’s CEO, Rick Smith, discussed this in a now-deleted webinar, noting that customers want cameras that look different due to public backlash. This move capitalizes on opposition to Flock, which has faced criticism for privacy risks, data sharing with agencies like ICE, and instances of law enforcement abuse. While some customers see redesigning cameras as a way to “help with the optics,” Axon is also exploring making ALPRs more overt with signage. The backlash against ALPRs, particularly Flock’s national network, has led some cities to switch to Axon.
