LAPD Abandons Flock Contract After Making a Horrifying Discovery

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) will not renew its contract with Flock Safety, a company that deploys AI-integrated license plate cameras. This decision stems from significant concerns regarding civil liberties, privacy, and data collection practices associated with the surveillance technology. The LAPD’s own Inspector General audit revealed a concerning error rate of 32.3 percent for Flock cameras, resulting in 161 false stolen-vehicle alerts that led to innocent drivers being pulled over. These inaccurate alerts can escalate to high-risk stops, disproportionately endangering Black Angelenos. Flock Safety’s technology has also been criticized for its potential to wrongly track individuals, as evidenced by a recent incident where a journalist was pursued by police due to faulty data.
