Waymo’s driverless cars are equipped with interior cameras that can monitor passenger behavior, as demonstrated by a recent incident in Northern California. Two 15-year-olds allegedly became intoxicated, dangled out of a moving Waymo, and fired gel pellet guns. The vehicle’s internal monitoring systems alerted Waymo, which then contacted law enforcement. The car was remotely guided to a parking lot where officers were waiting, and the teens were apprehended. While the car did not trap the passengers, the interior cameras served to identify and report the misconduct. This incident highlights that while Waymos are autonomous, they are not entirely unobserved, with cameras used for various purposes including security and emergency assistance.
