Orange County, Florida, is poised to continue its red light camera program for another decade with a proposed $38.7 million contract. The county, a significant operator with 57 active cameras, issues $158 tickets for violations, which do not impact driver’s license points. Proponents claim the cameras enhance safety by deterring red light running, while critics question fairness due to the lack of direct human oversight. Last year, the county collected over $7.6 million in fines, with a substantial portion supporting local road maintenance after vendor and state allocations. Notably, the county staff is recommending a new vendor, Modaxo, despite the current vendor, Verra Mobility, holding a dominant market share. This expansion occurs as red light camera programs statewide are declining, with fewer cities and counties operating them and overall revenue decreasing from previous peaks.
