Flock camera alerts, intended to identify stolen vehicles or suspects, have repeatedly triggered false positives in Colorado due to data entry errors, leading to innocent drivers being pulled over by law enforcement. Cases involve a 76-year-old grandmother and others whose license plates were erroneously flagged due to ambiguous characters (like ‘O’ vs. ‘0’) or typographical mistakes in police databases. These errors persisted for months, causing distress and inconvenience, with drivers having to actively push law enforcement agencies to correct their records. The ACLU of Colorado warns of significant civil liberties risks, particularly for marginalized individuals, and criticizes the lack of internal checks to prevent such failures in surveillance technology. A legislative effort to require warrants for accessing location tracking databases also failed.
