Nevada police may be tracking your phone's location without a warrant. Here's how.

Nevada has entered into a contract with Fog Data Science, a company providing software that allows police to track cellphone locations in near real-time without a warrant. The system, acquired for approximately $12,000 annually, enables law enforcement to identify device locations, analyze “patterns of life,” and deduce individuals’ movements, associations, and frequented places. Privacy advocates and legal experts express grave concerns, citing potential violations of Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures, arguing that such access traditionally requires a warrant. The low cost and federal grant funding allowed the contract to bypass standard governmental oversight. While Fog Data claims its data is anonymized, critics argue the technology creates a broad surveillance tool with significant potential for abuse, particularly concerning for civil liberties.
