Middletown issues 3,213 citations from school-zone speed cameras in less than a month

Middletown, Rhode Island’s school-zone speed cameras issued 3,213 citations in less than a month between January 6 and January 30, with an additional 959 citations remaining unpaid as of March 17. The deputy police chief stated that the police department extended the initial warning period for these cameras from the state-mandated 30 days to 70 days. The court processed over 200 citations involving more than 100 defendants in under 2.5 hours on March 17. The police department aims to enhance the efficiency of this process. Overall, the program has generated 6,540 citations, with the stated goal of encouraging drivers to reduce speed in school zones to protect children.
