A nationwide cyberattack has crippled Intoxalock’s breathalyzer ignition interlock systems, affecting thousands of individuals with OUI convictions across 46 states, including Maine. Since Saturday, drivers with these devices have been unable to start their vehicles if their blood alcohol content registers above .02, causing significant disruption to those who rely on their vehicles for work or daily life. Intoxalock confirmed hackers are flooding its servers, impacting installations, removals, calibrations, and account access. While the company claims user data is secure, the duration of the outage and potential ransom demands remain unclear. Maine’s Secretary of State is in contact with Intoxalock, and drivers can find vendor lists on the BMV website. Intoxalock announced systems were fully operational by Thursday and offered 10-day service extensions, pledging to cover associated costs, excluding standard calibration fees.
