Ban Pennsylvania red light cameras

Red light cameras, promoted as safety devices, may actually increase accidents and injuries. Data from Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Corpus Christi, Texas, suggests that collisions, particularly rear-end crashes, have risen significantly after camera installation. This increase is attributed to drivers slamming on brakes when they see the camera flash, a phenomenon not addressed by camera proponents. Longer yellow light times, however, have proven effective in reducing violations dramatically, with a 1.50-second increase in Virginia leading to a 94% drop in citations. Similarly, Winnipeg saw a 75-80% reduction in citations after adding 0.3 to 0.7 seconds to yellow lights. Despite this evidence, officials and camera companies are likely resistant to extending yellow light times because it would decrease ticket revenue, making the programs unprofitable. The secrecy surrounding camera data in Pennsylvania further hinders public understanding of their failures.
