Austin rejected license plate readers. DPS has brought them back.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has deployed license plate reader cameras in Austin, despite the city council’s efforts to restrict surveillance technology. These Flock Safety cameras, installed along major roadways, collect license plate data, date, time, and location. DPS claims the cameras enhance public safety by aiding in locating suspects and recovering stolen property. However, Austin previously rejected a similar program due to privacy concerns and data logging issues. DPS policy allows data retention for a year and sharing with other agencies, contrasting sharply with Austin’s seven-day limit and calls for stricter oversight. Local officials express concern that DPS’s less stringent policies could circumvent Austin’s privacy regulations.
