Coralville considers taking down license plate readers following warning from Iowa attorney general

Coralville City Council members are reconsidering their contract with Flock Safety for Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) following a directive from the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. The AG’s office stated that the city’s policy prohibiting ALPR use “solely for immigration purposes” violates state law, which mandates local entities not discourage immigration law enforcement. Several council members expressed strong opposition to altering their policy, preferring to terminate the ALPR contract altogether due to concerns about state overreach and potential for misuse, especially after recent federal enforcement actions. Council members cited the loss of local control and the risk of such technology being turned against constituents as reasons for wanting the cameras removed.
