A crack in Nevada's ban on red-light cameras

Nevada has maintained a 25-year ban on automated traffic cameras, stemming from civil liberties concerns raised in 1999 about “Big Brother” surveillance. Despite numerous legislative attempts to introduce red-light, speed, or school zone cameras, lawmakers have consistently rejected them, prioritizing privacy over potential safety gains. However, this year, Assembly Bill 527 carved out the first exception, permitting cameras on school buses to catch drivers who illegally pass when the lights are flashing. The Clark County School District is moving forward with vendor selection for these cameras, marking the first instance of automated traffic enforcement technology being implemented in Nevada in decades, albeit in a highly limited capacity.
