ACLU demands Connecticut halt license plate reader use over privacy concerns

November 12, 2025 • 16:33

The ACLU of Connecticut is demanding a moratorium on automated license plate readers (ALPRs) until the state passes laws to prevent misuse. Civil liberties advocates argue the unchecked surveillance creates a government database of every driver’s movements, posing a direct threat to immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and those seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care. Data from vendors like Flock Safety could be shared with federal agencies like ICE or authorities in states that criminalize such care. While Flock claims customers control their data, its policies permit disclosure when legally required, and past incidents have shown the data being used for immigration enforcement and tracking abortion seekers. The ACLU warns this widespread, unregulated tracking has a chilling effect on constitutional rights, turning everyday travel into a source of risk for already marginalized communities.
