Amazon Ring’s planned “Familiar Faces” recognition tool poses a significant threat to privacy and likely violates multiple state biometric laws. The feature works by scanning the face of every person who approaches a camera, creating a faceprint without their consent. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) argues this practice is illegal in states with opt-in consent laws for biometric data collection, such as Illinois and Texas, which Amazon is already avoiding. Beyond the legal challenges, the technology introduces severe risks, including the potential for mass surveillance through Ring’s police partnerships, the permanent danger of biometric data breaches, and the likelihood of algorithmic bias. The EFF contends that Amazon is offloading its legal responsibilities onto customers and calls for state regulators to investigate and enforce privacy protections before the feature is widely deployed, to prevent the normalization of pervasive facial surveillance.
