Some New Yorkers say they've been driven into debt by MTA toll fees.

Mta acts more like a loan shark on outdated accounts.

This really needs to be illegal!

The MTA’s tolling system can lead to massive debt for drivers. A few missed tolls can balloon with late fees, sometimes reaching tens of thousands of dollars, an order of magnitude greater than the original tolls. The MTA claims it offers relief through a ’toll payer advocate,’ but drivers report the process is slow, opaque, and offers are arbitrarily changed. One driver saw his fees reduced only after a news crew intervened. The MTA’s fee structure itself is confusing, with even officials being unable to clearly explain how fees escalate. This system disproportionately punishes individuals, including those who aren’t even the primary driver, trapping them in a cycle of debt with little recourse or transparency, effectively a form of private policing for revenue.
