$406,000 went to a private vendor.
In its first year, a school speed zone camera program in Leesburg, Florida, generated $1.2 million in fines from 19,267 citations issued between October 2024 and June 2024. According to a report by Police Chief Joe Iozzi, over 13,000 violators have paid the $100 fine, levied for speeding 11 mph or more over the school zone limit. The revenue was distributed among several entities: the state of Florida received over $294,000, the Lake County School District got $153,000, and the city of Leesburg’s share was nearly $361,000. The private vendor that operates the system, Altumint, received over $406,000 and covers all operational expenses. The program, enabled by a 2023 state law, is entirely violator-funded. An IIHS study in other cities suggests such programs can significantly reduce injury-related accidents.
