Milwaukee mayor, police chief, push for red light cameras

Milwaukee’s mayor and police chief are advocating for a bill to permit red light and speed cameras, framing them as an essential tool to combat a surge in reckless driving with a depleted police force. Officials claim the technology is a ‘proven, evidence-based solution’ and a ‘force multiplier’ that can be in more places than officers. The proposal, which would allow up to 75 cameras at high-crash intersections, received emotional support from victims of traffic violence who believe cameras could help identify perpetrators and prevent future tragedies. However, the push faces opposition from civil liberties advocates who warn about the expansion of government surveillance and the disproportionate financial impact that automated fines could have on low-income residents, creating cycles of debt and other social costs.
