Nebraska’s Attorney General is suing Lorex over deceptive marketing of its home security cameras, which are sold at major retailers like Costco. The lawsuit alleges Lorex failed to disclose its reliance on components and networks from Dahua, a Chinese manufacturer blacklisted by the U.S. government for enabling human rights abuses and posing significant national security threats. Federal regulators have already identified Dahua technology as vulnerable to remote hacking, allowing unauthorized interception of video and audio feeds. By marketing these systems as “safe and secure” for use in private spaces like children’s bedrooms, Lorex created a false sense of security. This action highlights a critical failure in the consumer surveillance market, where corporate supply chains can expose the most intimate details of family life to foreign state-affiliated actors without consumers’ knowledge or consent.
