The Lake County, Florida school board is scheduled to vote on a proposal to equip its school buses with automated cameras to ticket drivers who illegally pass when stop-arms are deployed. The district plans to partner with American Traffic Solutions, which will install and operate the camera systems at no cost to the schools. Drivers captured by the system will be issued a $225 citation in the mail. Revenue from these fines will be split between the vendor and the school district. According to the district’s Director of Transportation, the primary goal is not to generate profit but to enhance student safety and alter dangerous driving behaviors. A one-day survey by bus drivers recorded 215 illegal passing incidents, suggesting a significant safety issue. If approved, the cameras are expected to be operational by the 2026-27 school year.
