Traffic ticket scheme uses public records to trick drivers into paying

Scammers are exploiting public records to target drivers with recent traffic citations. Impersonating court officials, they contact victims by phone, citing specific details from the actual ticket to appear legitimate. The criminals promise to clear the ticket with no points or penalties if the victim pays them immediately using a mobile payment app like Apple Pay. One victim lost over $300 after sending money twice. This tactic is a new variation of common jury duty and warrant scams. Officials warn that court employees will never call or email to demand money or personal information, and they urge the public to be skeptical of such calls and to verify any supposed obligations directly with the Clerk of Court’s office. The ease with which public data can be weaponized for fraud highlights a significant vulnerability for citizens.
