The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk school district is joining an Albany County program that uses private vendor BusPatrol to install and operate stop-arm cameras on school buses. The system is designed to automatically ticket drivers who illegally pass a stopped bus, with a first-time fine of $250. Video evidence is reviewed before a citation is issued. This expansion follows the deployment of cameras on 425 buses across six other county districts, which has resulted in 33,000 tickets over three years. According to the Albany County Executive, the program is considered a success as the number of violations is reportedly declining. Revenue generated from the fines is directed back into funding driver and safety initiatives, creating a system where enforcement financially sustains related programs.
