Pittsburgh is advancing a red-light camera program, with the City Council giving preliminary approval to a five-year, nearly $14 million contract with private vendor Verra Mobility. The Arizona-based company will install and maintain an initial six cameras by early 2026, expanding to 30 over the contract period. The system operates by having Verra’s reviewers flag potential infractions, which are then sent to a city police officer for confirmation before the Pittsburgh Parking Authority mails a $100 ticket. While officials frame the program’s goal as safety rather than revenue, they also state the system is designed to be self-funding from violation fines. This creates a direct financial incentive for the city and its private partner to maintain a steady stream of tickets, raising questions about whether public safety or revenue generation is the true priority of this automated enforcement scheme.
