Pittsburgh to install red light cameras at some intersections

The Pittsburgh City Council is moving forward with a plan to install the city’s first red light cameras, contracting with the Arizona-based vendor Verra Mobility. The five-year deal is valued at nearly $14 million. Following legislation passed last year, the program will automatically issue tickets to drivers caught running red lights at designated, but currently undisclosed, intersections. The rollout will be gradual, beginning with six cameras this winter after an initial 60-day warning period for motorists. The city plans to have a total of 30 cameras operational by 2029. This initiative marks a significant step towards automated traffic enforcement in Pittsburgh, outsourcing the operation to a private company.
