Dayton could install 64 speed, 17 red light camera systems

Dayton plans a major expansion of its automated traffic enforcement, contracting with Modaxo to install approximately 64 new speed camera systems and 17 red-light cameras. This move marks the city’s return to red-light camera enforcement after a hiatus. The primary focus for the new fixed-site cameras will be the city’s 32 school zones, where state law allows Dayton to be reimbursed for fines collected. City officials, like Deputy Law Director John Musto, maintain that the program’s goal is safety and point to a new, lower-cost vendor contract. However, the program remains controversial. Critics have long argued the cameras serve as a revenue-generating tool that disproportionately penalizes low-income motorists. With over 140,500 citations issued last year under the previous system, the expansion is significant.
