'There's no point in fighting!' Drivers who appeal school speed zone camera fines almost guaranteed to lose

A 2023 Florida law enabling school zone speed cameras has generated over $32 million in fines and significant public backlash. Drivers report being unfairly cited due to confusing signage, particularly signs that state “when flashing” but are not equipped with or do not use active flashing beacons. The law, however, does not require the lights to be active, creating a legal trap for motorists. The appeals process offers little recourse; data from vendor RedSpeed shows virtually no contested tickets are dismissed in jurisdictions like Hillsborough County. A local magistrate has openly criticized the law’s ambiguity, calling it unfair. While the camera vendor defends the program as an effective safety measure funded by violators, affected drivers and even a co-sponsoring legislator now see it as a “gotcha moment” prioritizing revenue over clarity, prompting calls for legislative reform.
